New Valve (Tube) Radio Project
Having been inspired by Mr Carlson's Lab I've finally taken the plunge into restoring a valve radio!
This will be part 1 of a log of the restoration.
Murphy U198H 1958 Table Top Radio
I've been keeping an eye on EBay and Gumtree to try and find a suitable first valve radio restoration project, and I found one last night.
It's a 1958 Murphy U198H table model. It's not the prettiest thing going and has some cosmetic damage, but it looks like it's complete. What made my mind up for me though was finding a service manual for it online. They really knew how to do Right to Repair back then.
Condition
From the pictures it doesn't look like it's been worked on, you can see some really grotty looking original capacitors.
The Bakelite case is broken in a couple of places and needs a good clean, but there are plenty of sources online on how to address this.
Anyway, while I'm waiting for it to be delivered I'll get an order off to RS Components for new capacitors.
Service Manual
Thanks to Dave's Rust 'n Dust site for the service manual.
